September 16, 2023

Kelowna Road Trip - Saturday, September 16, 2023 - Suggested Itinerary

Notes: Research Plan before we visit

Would you like a copy of the current Library Catalogue? Claire suggested we email her with our research interests and if you would like some assistance from their “Genealogists in Residences” (they can then ensure that they have GIRs on-hand who have expertise to suit our members. For example, they have a well-known expert on Eastern European genealogy). We would like to get this info to Claire by September 4.

September 16, 2023

  • Leave Kamloops at 7:15 a.m. We can carpool. (Muster location to be determined)
  • Arrive at the downtown Kelowna Library, 1360 Ellis Street, at 10 a.m. (doors open at 10 a.m. – park in the Library Parkade adjacent to the Library – it is usually free on Saturdays)
  • Members of the KDGS will be there to greet you and they will have coffee/tea ready (they will take a pre-order from our group)
  • The KDGS will give you a tour of their KDGS Family & Local History Resource Centre located on the 2nd floor of the Library

Presentation in person by Claire Smith-Burns

at KFHS September 28, 2023 meeting

Social time:  6:30 p.m.  Meeting:  7 - 9:00 p.m.

"Organizing your Online Research and Digital Files"

One of the biggest concerns most genealogists have is how to organize their paper and digital files. We will look at organizational ideas, from keeping Research and Correspondence Logs to best ways to download and organize digital files, to using genealogical software to link your paper and digital research files. A good filing system will allow you to easily put your fingers on your family history documents.

MEMBERS:  TO SAVE YOUR SEAT, PLEASE RSVP TO Marg Rodgers at info@kfhs.org.

The Public will be invited to join us by donation only.

Biography:

Claire Smith-Burns became intrigued with family history in her teen-years and has been happily involved in genealogical research since then. In 1999, she attended a three-week genealogy study tour in England through Samford University, Alabama. Claire has also completed several courses through the BYU Family History program. She has led six research trips to the Family History Library in Salt Lake City and organized ten “Harvest Your Family Tree” conferences for the Kelowna & District Genealogical Society. These conferences were some of the largest genealogy events held in Western Canada. Claire has published several articles in Canadian genealogy journals and was awarded the Marion Keffer Prize by the Ontario Genealogical Society in 2002 for best original article. Currently, Claire is Vice-president of the Kelowna & District Genealogical Society and is the Online Parish Clerk for three parishes in Dorset, England.  In her other life, Claire manages her husband’s international safety consulting company, enjoys hiking and spends countless hours in her garden in Kelowna, British Columbia.
