Who We Are

The Kamloops Family History Society is a non-profit group formed in 1982. All monies raised by the Society go towards promoting the stated aims and objectives of the Society. Kamloops is located at the junction of the North and South Thompson Rivers in the South Central Interior of British Columbia, Canada. 

We are a friendly group of individuals who are researching their family histories. We’re also called genealogists. Our aims and objectives are:

• to assist and encourage our members doing original research into their ethnic and family background
• to promote and encourage the study of family history and genealogy in the Kamloops area
• to encourage and instruct our members in methods and effective techniques of genealogical research
• to collect and preserve information, books, manuscripts, maps, charts, photographs, and related materials relevant to genealogical study
• to publish and distribute books, bulletins and other printed materials to further the foregoing objectives
• to raise funds and, in so doing, to accept grants, donations, gifts, legacies and bequests for any of the foregoing objectives
• We welcome anyone interested in genealogy and the related fields of local history, biography, family history and other aspects of historical research.

Our Beginning - 1982

In September 1982, Gill McIntyre advertised in local papers for people interested genealogy/family history to attend a meeting. Twenty people attended and an executive and board were voted in to run the group with Gill elected as President and Dr. Bob McGinn as Vice President. Doreen Lay was treasurer, Shyanne Doyle, recording secretary, Vicki Lyall, corresponding Secretary and Elenore Chamberland Project Coordinator.
