A Message from the President 2010/2011

Spring 2010 and I find myself president of the Kamloops Family History Society. This is both appropriate and amazing. Appropriate because after so many years in the club, it’s my turn. Amazing and humbling to fill the office held by a long line of dedicated members. As I begin to write this President`s Message perhaps it is apt as a family historian to reflect on what has gone before me. From our founding mother Gill Gaiser to last years` president Doug Foreman, our presidents have given so much to our club. To use a well worn cliché: it’s a hard act to follow! It is therefore, with pride and some trepidation that I set forth to continue their work. I hope I can maintain the qualities that make KFHS such an enjoyable club while introducing new and stimulating programs.
In the years that I have served on the executive, a major goal has been to meet on our memberships` interests. Many meetings have been spent trying to match skills and topics with members needs. I hope we will continue present content pertinent to your research. Our task should be all the more successful this year thanks to the computer survey Doug just conducted. Your responses will help us fine tune our program. We hope to poll your opinions once or twice more this term.
The society of like minded souls is wonderfully satisfying and nowhere more so than in genealogy. One of the great benefits of a family history club is the camaraderie. While our families are dazzled and delighted to learn Great Great Grandpa was a publican in Kent or a peach orchardist in New Zealand, it’s only a fellow genealogist who can truly appreciate the arduous research. Just as camaraderie and sharing are important, so is member participation. Not only does member involvement keep us going, an active membership makes us a richer, more interesting group. We already have a core of very involved members and I am hopeful that we can encourage each of you to contribute in your own unique way: large or small, multifaceted or singular. Each of us is a valuable part of this joyous pursuit of heritage. Come join us in our genealogy journey!
