KFHS Members
As the administrator of our website I have had to inform the new President that a “President’s Message” is required for our Website as well as the Family Footsteps journal. This year is no different except that, I’m now the President, and I now know how it feels to be under the gun.
I have been involved with the executive since 1994 in various positions so the executive and its workings are not new to me. Being the President is. I know that Barb Pillar as Past President will help to guide me along for a little while as will all the other members of the executive. I would like to extend a special thank you to Doreen Morgan as she retires from the executive. She will be missed and hopefully will be back after a well deserved rest.
There have been a number of changes made this year already. We have moved our meeting location from the Southwest Community Church to the Heritage House on Lorne Street; changed our meeting day from the 4th Monday of the month to the 4th Thursday of the month. Hopefully this hasn’t alienated anyone and I do believe that there has been an increase in our membership since the move. The executive will need to determine if this new meeting place meets all our needs. One thing we need to work on is an internet connection.
The Kamloops Archives have moved the Census Microfilm as well as the BC Vital Stats to the Kamloops Public Library. This move makes those films available to more people in the community because the Library is open everyday and for longer hours than what was available at the Archives.
The Schoening Funeral Home records, (1961-1984), a project that has been on the go for the past two to three years, is finally nearing completion. The documents have been sent to Vancouver for microfilming and will soon be available at both at the Library and the Kamloops Archives. The Archives have a second copy of the Funeral home records from 1888 to 1960 and hopefully they can be persuaded to donate that second copy to the library so both facilities can have a complete set. All that remains to be done is to verify the index and have it published on our website.
For the next year I feel that we as a group need to address more of the needs of our newer members. This may mean reviving our beginners program or coming up with new ideas to help our newer members be successful in their research. As well there may be opportunities we can explore with the Library, the Archives and the LDS church that will benefit all the groups involved.
I look forward to the challenges ahead.
Sincerely,
Doug Foreman, President |
